Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.
The ex-president was found guilty of orchestrating a armed takeover in September and handed more than over two decades in prison, but he continued under confinement pending court reviews.
Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a precautionary step after fresh information were revealed.
This included attempting to break his tracking device and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a potential flight.
Judicial Records Show Escape Risks
In a filing authorising the arrest, the magistrate said information from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his escape.
This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his offspring.
His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a senator, called for a gathering of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.
The senator wrote on online platforms on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your couch? I urge you to struggle with us."
He said the gathering would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of the judge's determination was the chance of the former president's move to embassies near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of arranging to seek refuge through a embassy office", a announcement said.
The legal document underscores that the US embassy in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.
International Reactions
His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative US President Trump, leading him to implement a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
Bolsonaro is being held in a federal law enforcement building in Brazil's capital city and will have a imprisonment assessment on the next day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with tracking devices.
They also requested that he be permitted to leave his home for medical care, saying he required regular treatment for lung conditions and other health problems.
Details of Guilty Verdict
He was convicted of leading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the 2022 election to his political opponent, President Lula.
High Court judges said that he knew of a scheme which encompassed plans to kill his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over the former president's case.
The plot was prevented because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the armed forces officials. Lula was took office without incident on January 1st, 2023.
But a week later, on 8 January, many his followers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the national capital, the capital city.
The law enforcement intervened and around 1,500 people were arrested.
The judges found that the protesters had been incited by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, reestablish control and return him to office.
At the moment, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also barred from running for public office until the year 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The one-time head of state called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the 2026 national vote.
