The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

We present a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate scary movies: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like standard body horror, but inside Together exists a profound contemplation about our choices in loving one another.

A Directorial Debut Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for a decade. Married in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The plot begins when the couple move from the metropolis to the rural area for Millie’s job. A familiar narrative setup, sure, but that’s primarily where the conventions conclude. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their new home, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a slow burn fright fest, blending moments of fever-dream horrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes during something horrific). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and delivers them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is only the two lead actors, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and far away from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in another person. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together avoids making one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie grapple with the sort of issues that are inherent in long-term unions a decade in. Deep down, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory avoids being clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a powerful case for staying single. On the other hand, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and state, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can experience today.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
