Trump's Progressive Warning Misses The Continent's True Danger: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed assessment of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "progressive" agendas pose an grave risk to the continent's identity. However, this argument rests on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The true danger confronting the EU is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Growth Gap Separating Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. Over this time, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly 50% of the world’s top fifty technology firms are US-based, while only four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Problem

This widening economic gap is driven by superior productivity growth in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech dominance is decidedly US-centric. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at over $10bn, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This gap prompts a pressing issue: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does the EU stand? Most analysts agree it is essentially a contest between two between the United States and China, with Europe starting at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several major factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic network for funding startups. The EU still lacks a genuine unified investment market, a factor that limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hinder European business. A US startup can launch a service under one set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a larger population size, is divided among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, one can find causes for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to propose serious reform. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the need for major changes.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses considerable advantages: skilled human capital, top-tier education systems, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements could unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating next-generation tech, it can still significantly increase economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, without decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
